LG Optimus One - The update to the latest Android is starting to roll out for the popular LG Optimus One, which was one of LG's best-sellers last year, with innovative promotional campaigns and celebrity endorsements to boot. Promised to arrive in May before, the first batch of the Gingerbread updates appears to have hit in Romania, of all places, as is confirmed from the comments on LG's Facebook page.

People who have installed it report it is working fine, with the only issue being the proximity sensor now turns the screen back on at a larger distance when you finish the conversation.

The LG Optimus One has its versions on major US carriers, and turned out to be quite a popular budget Android handset, so hopefully the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update will be rolling to the New World sooner rather than later. Knowing the US carriers policies and restrictions when it comes to updating, though, LG will have more red tape to overcome on this side of the pond.

Apparently the FCC has had a new Motorola phone submitted to it that sounds like it could possibly be the Droid X2. The phone carries the model ID IHDT56MJ1, which is all we have to work with since Motorola apparently requested that the device’s name remain anonymous for 180 days (roughly six months for those who had trouble in math). If the conclusion of the period of anonymity coincides with the phone’s launch, that would put it at August or September, which sounds reasonable to us for a Droid X2 launch.


The two pictures on the left below were not snooped from the FCC, but were from a leak last month picked up by TheMobiZone, supposedly showing the Droid X’s sequel. If the design in the picture is accurate, then the front of the device will be virtually indistinguishable from the original Droid X (pictured to the right).
The phone at the FCC is EVDO and CDMA compatible (consistent with its being tied to Verizon – as all Droid phones are). Other rumored specs for the Droid X2 include a 4.3-inch screen (540×960 resolution), a dual-core Tegra 2 processor and 8MP camera.

The BlackBerry Style 9670 is a new BlackBerry smartphone in every sense: it’s the first full QWERTY clamshell BlackBerry and it has the new BlackBerry OS 6 software with modern visuals and a new web browser. It’s a shame that it took RIM so long to offer a clamshell BlackBerry with a full QWERTY keyboard (rather than the Pearl Flip’s abbreviated SureType keyboard) but when they finally did, RIM turned out a winner. The BlackBerry Style looks gorgeous, has a solid build and is reasonably fast. The Style has a 528 MHz processor, 512MB internal flash memory, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with flash, built-in Wi-Fi and a GPS, and a microSD card slot that supports up to 32GB cards.

The BlackBerry Style is a dual band CDMA phone that’s currently available on Sprint and has fast 3G EVDO Rev. A for data. The smartphone comes in two colors: Steel Grey and Royal Purple.


Design and Ergonomics

The aptly named BlackBerry Style indeed looks stylish and feels incredibly comfortable in hand. Measuring 3.78 x 2.36 x 0.73 inches with the flip closed, the BlackBerry Style is perfect for those who want to put their Berry in a back pocket or a shirt pocket. When the flip is open, the phone feels quite long measuring 6.91 inches in length, which might be too long for some users with small to average size faces. That’s the price you pay for a 2.8” 360 x 400 resolution display, a 240 x 320 resolution external display, a trackpad with four menu keys and a full QWERTY keyboard. Both displays look good. The external screen shows the time, incoming calls and alerts for messages, missed calls and updates from social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The main internal screen is sharp and bright with saturated colors. The new BlackBerry 6 UI looks great on the screen, so do videos, pictures and web pages. Neither of the displays is a touch screen.

As with all the latest BlackBerry smartphones, you get an optical trackpad for navigating menus and screens. The trackpad on the Style is very responsive and the usual four keys flank the trackpad: call send, BlackBerry menu, back and call end/power on/off. These menu keys aren’t discrete buttons but when you press them they click. The full QWERTY keyboard has “waterfall” style keys like those found on the BlackBerry Torch and Bold line of smartphones. The keys aren’t very big, but as with most BlackBerry keyboards, you won’t make many mistakes typing on the BlackBerry Style keyboard. A loud speakerphone sits just below the QWERTY keyboard that’s convenient for conference calls. The phone is a bit top-heavy due to the flip design, and it takes more effort to hold the phone securely when typing vs. standard candy bar BlackBerry smartphones. We noted the same problem with the BlackBerry Torch, whose vertical slider adds weight to the top end of the phone.

The BlackBerry Style has a shiny cover and top that give the phone a chic look, but the shiny surface also attracts hand grease and fingerprints like crazy. So if you want your phone to look presentable at all times, bring a cleaning cloth with you. Thankfully the back cover and the sides of the phone aren’t shiny or slippery, making the phone easy to handle. One nice thing about the BlackBerry Style is that you don’t need to take the battery door off to access the microSD card slot. The charging port and microSD card slot live on left side of the phone along with a standard 3.5mm audio out jack, and the volume buttons and the camera launcher button (programmable convenience key) live on the right. If you like to use Blackberry Charging cradles, the Style has cradle contacts.

Following the slew of new details we showed you for the iPad 2 earlier today we’re going to take the iPhone 5 in our sights as some of the parts found inside the next-gen tablet will also be used when building the next-gen Apple handset.

The iPhone 5 is said to be already in testing, “discreetly,” by Apple senior staff, and that the phone is completely redesigned. Previous rumors did say the iPhone 5 could be even slimmer, and we’re rather interested to see how that whole external antenna thing we’ll be handled in the next-gen smartphone. Will Apple keep using it or replace it with an internal one?

Today we’re looking at rumored specs and features for the iPhone 5, as we don’t have any leaked images to backup any of the suggested important design changes yet. The iPhone 5, just like the iPad 2, is said to pack a new A5 processor that’s based on a multi-core Cortex A9 chip, a Qualcomm chipset that would sport CDMA, GSM and UMTS baseband support (which basically means Apple will launch a single smartphone that will be able to deal with both Verizon’s and AT&T’s network), but no 4G LTE support, not that we expected this model to come with 4G capabilities yet.

Just like the iPad 2 has to be able to face the competition for a full year, the iPhone 5 has to do the same thing once it gets official. Apple will have to come out with a strong smartphone this year, particularly considering what we’ve seen at CES 2011, and what will probably follow at MWC 2011, when it comes to smartphone alternatives (4G LTE / WiMAX / HSPA+ support, dual-core processors, unexpected features, etc) as Apple will only have one smartphone out, and thus just a chance to fight the competition.

With at least five months before the iPhone 5’s release dates will be announced we’re probably in for a lot more iPhone-related rumors, so stick around for more details!

The Sony Ericsson F305 is Sony Ericsson’s first Motion Gaming-enabled phone. Or well, no, that’s actually not true, but it’s the first to go by that name in particular. It’s a quad-band GSM phone with support for EDGE network speeds.

This low/mid-level phone sports some rather cool gaming features. The three pre-loaded games - Bowling, Bass fishing & Jockey - will enable you to use movements to play the game. Say, you load up the bowling game - how do you play it? Simply imitate the movement of the bowling ball throw with the Sony Ericsson F305, and you’ll be playing the game. Simple, isn’t it? It’s a bit like the concept behind Nintendo Wii, although I find it hard to believe this will work just as great as the Wii does. Other than the special gaming features, the Sony Ericsson F305 offers a set of PlayStation-like gaming keys just above the display, as well as a shortcut key to your games. If you’re in the middle of a game, but the battery is running low (meaning you’ve played almost 8 hours!), you can quickly plug in the battery Power Pack CCP-100 (extra accessory), and you can play for hours again. That’s actually a rather clever accessory, and I hope it’ll be available for other phones, although there’s a chance that won’t happen.

Sony Ericsson F305 features loud stereo speakers on the back of it, making your gaming experience even better. If you feel like challenging a friend of yours in a match, you can do this via Bluetooth on some games.

F305 has got a decent music player capable of playing the most standard audio compression codecs, including the über-compressed eAAC+ codec. The phone memory is a bit limited though at only 10 megabytes, so you’ll have to expand the memory with a Memory Stick Micro card. Your music can then be transfered via a USB connection. You can stream your music wireless in stereo, as the phone features the Bluetooth A2DP profile. You can also have a listen to the radio with the built-in FM radio, and recognize the music playing with TrackID.

The display on the front of this Polar White or Mystic Black phone is a 2-inch large TFT display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels, and up to 262.144 colours. While the resolution isn’t exactly excellent, it’ll make the rendering of 3D games quicker, and more games are available for phones of this screen resolution.

The F305 measures a good 96 x 47 x 14.6 millimetres, and weighs in at just 97.5 grams, making it a bit heavier than it actually looks. F305 will be out in selected markets in Q3 this year. We expect the price tag to be relatively low, considering this is a low/mid-end phone.

The F305 will be officially announced on Tuesday 17th.
