The iPhone 5 is said to be already in testing, “discreetly,” by Apple senior staff, and that the phone is completely redesigned. Previous rumors did say the iPhone 5 could be even slimmer, and we’re rather interested to see how that whole external antenna thing we’ll be handled in the next-gen smartphone. Will Apple keep using it or replace it with an internal one?
Today we’re looking at rumored specs and features for the iPhone 5, as we don’t have any leaked images to backup any of the suggested important design changes yet. The iPhone 5, just like the iPad 2, is said to pack a new A5 processor that’s based on a multi-core Cortex A9 chip, a Qualcomm chipset that would sport CDMA, GSM and UMTS baseband support (which basically means Apple will launch a single smartphone that will be able to deal with both Verizon’s and AT&T’s network), but no 4G LTE support, not that we expected this model to come with 4G capabilities yet.
Just like the iPad 2 has to be able to face the competition for a full year, the iPhone 5 has to do the same thing once it gets official. Apple will have to come out with a strong smartphone this year, particularly considering what we’ve seen at CES 2011, and what will probably follow at MWC 2011, when it comes to smartphone alternatives (4G LTE / WiMAX / HSPA+ support, dual-core processors, unexpected features, etc) as Apple will only have one smartphone out, and thus just a chance to fight the competition.
With at least five months before the iPhone 5’s release dates will be announced we’re probably in for a lot more iPhone-related rumors, so stick around for more details!
